May 18, 1998—The Linton Lady Lions shot a 398 to capture their second straight Region I Golf Tournament title. Katie Carr (97), Lacey Carr (98) and Heather Benz (99) finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively, while Nikki Jahner (104) placed 7th and Mary Praus (105) placed 8th for Linton. All five earned a spot on the All-Region I team, and teammate Amanda Dockter will join them during the team competition at the State Golf Tournament. Linton’s Dan Carr was selected as the 1998 Region I Girls Golf Coach of the Year.

25 YEARS AGO

May 14, 1983—The Linton Lady Lions scored 122 points to capture the Girls team championship in the Region 7 Track Meet, held at Hughes Field in Bismarck. Freshman standout Jill Jahner led the way with individual titles in the 100-meter (:12.54) and 200-meter (:26.33) dashes, and she also anchored the region champion 800-meter relay (1:49.86) team. Other members of the relay team were freshmen Lisa Bosch, Julie Horner and Jody Dockter. Jahner also qualified for state with a 2nd place finish in the long jump (17' 3.5"), while Horner and Dockter each qualified for state in the 100-meter dash. Other region champions for Linton were Lisa Nagel (discus) and Shelly Ballard (shot put). Other state qualifiers for Linton were Carmen Greff (800-meter run), Michelle Schneider (javelin) and the 400-meter relay team (Dockter, Horner, Bosch and Carmen Petrick). Cara Weiser was the only state qualifier for Hazelton with a first place finish in the 800-meter run (2:33.54) and a runner-up finish in the 1,600-meter run (6:01.59).

50 YEARS AGO

May 15, 1958—The Hazelton Tigers captured the South Central Conference Baseball title with a 5-0 record. The Tigers defeated Steele (2-1), Zeeland (7-1), Wishek (21-4), Napoleon (6-2) and Strasburg (5-3) to finish a perfect conference slate. Members of the team include Coach Stan Peerboom, Larry Jahner, Paul Kalberer, Jon Kalberer, Bruce Benz, Aldon Draeger, Chuck Gimbel, Ronnie Humann, Kenny Jahner, Tom Weiser and Leslie Weiser. The Tigers will play Streeter on May 26, with the winner advancing to the State High School Baseball Tournament in Jamestown.
