Lintons Hulm, Lion 400-meter relay team place in State Track Meet
Lintons Colin Hulm placed 8th in the 300-meter hurdles, and the Lion 400-meter relay team placed 7th during the State Class B Track Meet in Bismarck, May 23 and 24. Hulm, a junior who set a personal best time while winning his heat, and finished with the 4th best time (:41.63) in the preliminaries, crossed the tape in :42.37 during the finals to place 8th. Rowdy Lund of Watford City was the champion in the event with a time of :39.92, and Aaron Grinsteinner (:40.73) of Dickinson Trinity was the runner-up. The Lion 400-meter relay team, consisting of juniors Colin Hulm and Alex Deis, sophomore Monte Deis, and freshman Zach Serr, finished 6th (:45.82) in the preliminaries, was just one 1-hundredths of a second (:45.83) slower in the finals, but they finished in 7th place. Hazen (Brent Sorensen, Colton Burr, Jacob Erhardt and Brian Sorensen) won the event with a time of :44.82, and Lisbon (:45.01) was the runner-up. Lintons Kevin Schneider competed in two events on a rain-soaked track on the final day, but he did not reach the finals of either event. Schneider, a senior, leaped 38' 11" in the triple jump, which was not good enough to reach the final eight. Tyler Skaskivage of Hatton-Northwood won the event (42' 10"), while John Albus of Oakes was the runner-up (42' 6.5"). In the high jump, the Class B bar opened at 5 feet, 10 inches, which would have been a season-high jump for Schneider, and he came up short in his bid to reach the finals in the event. James Smith of Heart River won the event (6' 2"), while Chris Nordloef (6' 0") of Stanley-Powers Lake placed 2nd. Alex Deis also competed in the 100-meter dash, but his preliminary time of :11.35 was not enough to put him in the finals. The event was won by Hazens Brian Sorensen (:11.11), who edged out Deland Weyrauch (:11.12) of Williams County for the title. Hulm and Alex Deis, along with senior Zach Tesky and sophomore Jared Jacob, made up Lintons 800-meter relay team, whose time of 1:36.53 in the preliminaries was not enough to get them to the finals. Watford City (Rowdy Lund, Tyler Fixen, Kevin Sanford and Justin Shipman) captured the state title (1:32.58), while Hazen placed 2nd (1:32.70) in the event. Freshman Tobie Wald was the only other qualifier for Linton, but his time of :19.18 in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles left him well short of reaching the finals. The event was won by Mott-Regents Blaise Kautzman (:15.06), and Bottineaus Scott Roemmich (:15.15) finished 2nd. Individual standouts in the Boys Division of the State Class B Meet were Hazens Brian Sorensen and Glenburns Seth Wisthoff. Sorensen, a senior, was part of four state titles, including 3 individual crowns in the 100-meter dash (:11.11), 200-meter dash (:22.15) and 400-meter dash (:50.92). Sorensen was also the anchor on the State Champion 1,600-meter relay team (:44.82). Wisthoff, who was selected as the 2008 Class B Boys Senior Track Athlete of the Year, won his third straight State crowns in both the shot put (59' 2") and discus (184' 0"). His effort in the discus broke the Class B State Record of 183' 11", set by Carringtons Jim Kleinsasser in 1995. Rugbys Scott Grochow was selected as the 2008 Class B Boys Track Coach of the Year.
