Linton Legion team splits with OakesThe Linton American Legion Baseball team split a doubleheader at Oakes on June 18, to fall to 1-1 in Section 2 and 3-7 overall. Oakes dominated the opening game before winning by 10-run rule without coming to bat in the bottom of the 5th. Oakes scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the 1st, and added 4 more in the bottom of the 2nd to open up a commanding, 6-0 cushion. That would be more than enought for Oakes starter Matt Schmitt, who did not allow more than one man to reach in any inning for Linton. Oakes added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, before exploding for 6 runs in the bottom of the 4th to open up a 14-0 bulge. Schmitt then retired the side in order in the top of the 5th to end the game. Schmitt did not allow a hit, walked 2 and struck out 11 on his way to the shutout. Kevin Schneider took the loss for Linton, allowing 8 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits and 2 walks over 3 innings. Zach Tesky allowed 6 runs on 5 hits and a walk while pitching the fourth. Brady Weber scattered 3 hits over 5 innings as Linton salvaged a split by taking the night cap, 5-2. Neither team could get on the board until Linton pushed across 3 runs in the top of the 3rd inning. Colin Hulm singled in John Jangula to start a 2-out rally, and later, Kevin Schneider and Jamie Sathren each drew bases-loaded walks to extend the lead to 3-0. Oakes answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning, and Beau Voegelis double plated Zach Roberts and Taylor Ptacek to cut the lead to 3-2. However, that would be all of the scoring for Oakes on the night, and Linton added a couple of insurance runs in the top of the 4th to complete the scoring. Weber walked one and struck out 7 over 5 innings for the victory. Roberts allowed 5 runs on 1 hit with 8 walks and 8 strikeouts in 5 innings, while taking the loss for Oakes. Hulm (RBI, run) had the lone hit for Linton, but Weber and Ryan Hoffman each reached base twice and scored once for Linton. Voegeli (2 RBI), Roberts (run) and Cody Kasprick each had one hit for Oakes. |
