Fourth-ranked Shiloh Christian outlasts Lady Lions

Shiloh Christian erased a 9-point deficit on the way to a 52-46 victory over Linton-HMB in Linton on Dec. 20. Shiloh, ranked 4th in the State Class B Poll, improved to 5-0 on the season, while Linton-HMB suffered its first loss in four outings so far this season.

Shiloh grabbed an early lead in the game, and the Lady Skyhawks opened up a 13-7 advantage after Brenna Jessen knocked down a threepointer with just over 3:00 left in the first quarter. However, Shiloh wouldn’t hit another field goal in the period, and Linton-HMB closed out the frame with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to a point (15-14) at the end of the quarter.

Shiloh misfired on 9 straight field goal attempts and went scoreless for a 4:40 span, while Linton-HMB scored the first 10 points of the second quarter to complete a 14-0 run. Tiffaney Gerving’s three-pointer capped the run and gave the Lady Lions their biggest lead (24-15) of the game with 4:42 left in the first half, but Shiloh ripped off 8 unanswered points over the next 2:00, and the Lady Skyhawks drew within 24-23 on a basket by Mikayla Forness with 2:37 left. McKenna Flyberg answered with a three-pointer on Linton- HMB’s ensuing trip, and neither team scored again until Jessen put in a basket in the closing seconds of the period to leave Linton-HMB with a 27-25 lead at the intermission.

Shiloh completed its comeback during the third period, and after Paige Emmel drained a three-pointer at the 4:33 mark to give Shiloh a 32-29 lead, the Lady Skyhawks never lost the lead again. Linton-HMB misfired on 6 of its final 7 field goal attempts in the third period, and committed 6 turnovers in the frame, and Shiloh used a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 36-31 with just over 3:00 left in the period. Both teams went cold over the remainder of the period, and the only points in the frame from that point came on Taryn Schlosser’s basket with :10 left to cut the lead to 36-33 with one quarter left.

However, Shiloh picked up baskets from Beth Muggerud and Forness over the next :40 to gain some breathing room (44-38), and Linton-HMB would never have the opportunity to tie the game on any single trip the rest of the way.

Amber Umber’s threepointer cut the lead in half (48-45) with 1:45 remaining, but Linton-HMB would not hit another field goal in the game, and that would be as close as the Lady Lions would get the rest of the way. Emmel answered with a basket on the ensuing trip, and after Schlosser hit a free throw for Linton-HMB, Forness hit a jumper to close out the scoring (52-46) with just :45 left.

Shiloh hit on 10 of 27 field goals in each half and finished 20 of 54 (37%) from the field, includinga3of11(27%) showing from behind the arc. The Lady Skyhawks also hit 9 of 14 (64%) free throws, held a 34-31 advantage in rebounds, and committed just 10 turnovers in the game. Linton-HMB hit on just 6 of 19 (32%) field goals in the second half and finished at 40 percent (17 of 42) from the field in the game. The Lady Lions hit on 5 of 14 (36%) three-point attempts, and just 7 of 17 (41%) free throws, including just 6 of 14 (43%) in the second half. Linton-HMB also turned the ball over 16 times in the game.

Forness scored a dozen of her game-high 21 points in the second half, and Emmel netted 14 points for Shiloh. Muggerud, who fouled out early in the fourth quarter, finished with 8 points, and Watson chipped in 6 points for the Lady Skyhawks. Flyberg tallied 14 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists, while Larson scored 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds for Linton-HMB. Amber Umber netted 8 points and 4 rebounds, Schlosser tallied 7 points and 6 rebounds, and Alex Umber (3 rebounds, 3 assists) and Gerving chipped in 3 points apiece for the Lady Lions.
