Fourth-ranked Shiloh Christian outlasts Lady Lions
Shiloh Christian erased a 9-point deficit on the way to a 52-46 victory over Linton-HMB in Linton on Dec. 20. Shiloh, ranked 4th in the State Class B Poll, improved to 5-0 on the season, while Linton-HMB suffered its first loss in four outings so far this season.
Shiloh grabbed an early lead in the game, and the Lady Skyhawks opened up a 13-7 advantage after Brenna Jessen knocked down a threepointer with just over 3:00 left in the first quarter. However, Shiloh wouldn’t hit another field goal in the period, and Linton-HMB closed out the frame with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to a point (15-14) at the end of the quarter.
Shiloh misfired on 9 straight field goal attempts and went scoreless for a 4:40 span, while Linton-HMB scored the first 10 points of the second quarter to complete a 14-0 run. Tiffaney Gerving’s three-pointer capped the run and gave the Lady Lions their biggest lead (24-15) of the game with 4:42 left in the first half, but Shiloh ripped off 8 unanswered points over the next 2:00, and the Lady Skyhawks drew within 24-23 on a basket by Mikayla Forness with 2:37 left. McKenna Flyberg answered with a three-pointer on Linton- HMB’s ensuing trip, and neither team scored again until Jessen put in a basket in the closing seconds of the period to leave Linton-HMB with a 27-25 lead at the intermission.
Shiloh completed its comeback during the third period, and after Paige Emmel drained a three-pointer at the 4:33 mark to give Shiloh a 32-29 lead, the Lady Skyhawks never lost the lead again. Linton-HMB misfired on 6 of its final 7 field goal attempts in the third period, and committed 6 turnovers in the frame, and Shiloh used a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 36-31 with just over 3:00 left in the period. Both teams went cold over the remainder of the period, and the only points in the frame from that point came on Taryn Schlosser’s basket with :10 left to cut the lead to 36-33 with one quarter left.
A pair of free throws by Emmel, and a basket by Regan Watson gave Shiloh its biggest lead (40-33) with 6:50 remaining, but Flyberg finally got Linton-HMB on the board with a pair of free throws at the 6:03 mark, and after Shiloh misfired on the other end, Kaidra Larson converted a three-point play to cut the margin to 40-38 with 5:39 left. However, Shiloh picked up baskets from Beth Muggerud and Forness over the next :40 to gain some breathing room (44-38), and Linton-HMB would never have the opportunity to tie the game on any single trip the rest of the way.
Amber Umber’s threepointer cut the lead in half (48-45) with 1:45 remaining, but Linton-HMB would not hit another field goal in the game, and that would be as close as the Lady Lions would get the rest of the way. Emmel answered with a basket on the ensuing trip, and after Schlosser hit a free throw for Linton-HMB, Forness hit a jumper to close out the scoring (52-46) with just :45 left.
