Lady Clippers open conference play with setback to Ellendale
Ellendale added to its lead at each stop, and the Lady Cardinals pulledawaytoa61-41victory over Strasburg-Zeeland in Strasburg on Dec. 20 in the South Central Conference opener for both teams. Ellendale evened its record at 1-1, while Strasburg-Zeeland dropped to 1-2 overall.
Madilyn Bommersbach, Rachel Herman and Shayna Mertz each scored 6 points in the opening quarter to help Ellendale take a 20-15 advantage at the end of the frame. The first quarter would be the most productive for both teams on the night, but Strasburg-Zeeland was unable to score in double digits in any of the final three quarters.
The Lady Clippers hit just one field goal during the second period, but they sank 7 of 8 free throws in the frame to stay somewhat within striking distance. Nonetheless, Ellendale got three-pointers from Bommersbach and Herman during the period, and the Lady Cardinals doubled (34-24) their lead by halftime. Bommersbach (9), Herman (9) and Mertz (8) combined for 26 points in the half for Ellendale, while Jennifer Wikenheiser paced the Lady Clipper’s first-half attack with 9 points.
Ellendale continued to control the game in the second half, and Strasburg-Zeeland was unable to generate enough offense to make any kind of a run at the deficit. Ellendale increased its lead to 46-33 by the end of the third quarter, and Bommersbach scored 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers, to help the Lady Cardinals pull away in the final period.
Ellendale shot 54 percent (25 of 46) from the field, sank 7 of 11 free throws, and committed just 9 turnovers in the game. The Lady Cardinals also held a commanding,
38-17 advantage in rebounds, including a 13-1 clip on the offensive glass. Strasburg-Zeeland shot 75 percent (12 of 16) from the line and turned the ball over just 11 times in the game, but the Lady Clippers hit on just 14 of 40 (35%) field goal attempts, including just 1 of 8 tries from behind the arc.
Bommersbach netted a game-high 19 points, while Mertz scored 14, and Herman chipped in 10 points for Ellendale. Dacey Fuller added 6 points, and Isabel Wedell, Kristen Stoppleworth and Kirsten Rall scored 4 points apiece to complete the scoring for the Lady Cardinals.
Wikenheiser led Strasburg- Zeeland with 12 points and 3 steals, while Suzanne Ternes scored 10 points, Courtney Bubach netted 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals, andAliWolfchippedin7points and 3 rebounds for the Lady Clippers.
