Lady Lions open district play with win over Central Prairie

Linton-HMB opened its District 6 slate with a 52-40 victory over Central Prairie in Gackle on January 3. The Lady Lions improved to 4-1 overall, while Central Prairie dropped to 1-1 on the season.

Though a heavy favorite to win the game, Linton-HMB was sluggish throughout the contest, and the Lady Lions had trouble shaking a pesky Central Prairie squad. Linton-HMB led by just a point (10-9) at the end of the first period, and took a 23-18 advantage to the intermission. Kaidra Larson (8) andAmber Umber (6) combined for 14 points for Linton-HMB in the first half.

Larson added another 8 points to her tally during the third quarter, and Linton-HMB looked as though it would start pulling away after opening up its biggest lead (38-24) late in the period. However, Central Prairie closed out the period with a 6-0 run to cut the margin to single digits (38-30) heading into the final frame.

Linton-HMB, however, maintained a fairly comfortable lead throughout the final stanza, and McKenna Flyberg hit a pair of three-pointers to help the Lady Lions finally pull away. Linton-HMB shot 44 percent (23 of 52) from the field, committed just 6 turnovers, and held a 26-21 advantage in rebounds, but the Lady Lions attempted just 4 free throws the entire game, sinking 3 of them. Central Prairie connected on 17 of 42 (40%) field goals, and just 3 of 10 (30%) free throws in the game.

Larson finished with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists, while Amber Umber netted 9 points and a pair of steals for Linton-HMB. Flyberg tallied 8 points, with game-highs in rebounds (8) and assists (5), and Alex Umber netted 8 points, including 6 in the final period, to go along with 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists for the Lady Lions. Madi Moldenhauer paced Central Prairie with 15 points, and Jordan Spitzer and Noelle Moser chipped in 9 points apiece for the Lady Firebirds.
