Napoleon hands Strasburg- Zeeland third straight loss
Strasburg-Zeeland opened its District 6 schedule on the road against Napoleon, and the Lady Clippers came home on the short end of an 89-31 drubbing. Napoleon, the 3rd-ranked team in the latest Class B Poll, improved to 4-0 on the season, while Strasburg-Zeeland suffered its third straight loss to fall to 1-3 on the young season.
Napoleon wasted little time jumping out in front, as Kendra Weigel knocked down 4 three-pointers in the opening quarter to help the Lady Imperials open up a 28-13 advantage by the end of the frame. All-stater Sheridon Dewald got into the act in the second period, scoring 11 points in the frame, and Napoleon blew the game open (55-22) by halftime. Dewald (17) and Weigel (14) combined for 31 points in the first half.
What little offense Strasburg Zeeland showed in the first half would totally disappear in the second half. The Lady Clippers hit just four field goals and scored just 9 points over the final two periods, including just 3 points in the final quarter. Napoleon, meanwhile, kept padding its lead, and the Lady Imperials opened up a 76-28 cushion before clearing their bench for the final quarter.
Napoleon shot a sizzling, 67 percent (38 of 57) from the field, including 7 of 13 (54%) from behind the arc. The Lady Imperials held a 34- 19 advantage in rebounds and committed 14 turnovers in the game. Strasburg-Zeeland hit one more free throw (11) than field goals (10), and finished at a dismal, 22 percent (10 of 45) from the field. The Lady Clippers hit 11 of 19 (58%) free throws, but committed 24 costly turnovers in the game.
Weigel tallied a game-high 19 points, while Dewald, who did not score in the second half, finished with 17 points. Brenna Schmidt scored 13 points, Shaina Weigel netted 12 (all in the final period), and Mariah Jangula and Mikayla Young chipped in 8 points apiece for the Lady Imperials.Ali Wolf paced Strasburg-Zeeland with 13 points and 3 steals, while Courtney Bubach (4 assists, 3 steals) and Jennifer Wikenheiser chipped in 7 points each for the Lady Clippers.
