James Joseph Gefroh, 52, of Strasburg


James Gefroh James Gefroh James Joseph Gefroh, 52, of Strasburg died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, in the Strasburg Care Center.

James was born on June 17, 1960, in Linton, the son ofAloysius M. and MaryAnn (Schumacher) Gefroh. As a young man, he worked on the family farm until graduating from Emmons Central, Strasburg in 1978. Soon after he met and married Shelly Jo Halbakken. In the years to follow he owned a construction company in Florida and later raised his three children in Louisiana.

In 2001, he returned to North Dakota and remarried having an additional four children. James spent his past few years as a truck driver which became a hobby as much as it was an occupation. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, farming, western movies, playing cards and most of all, spending time with his family. He was a jack-of-all-trades, and seemed able to do or fix almost anything. He was a very hardworking man who took pride in his work, family, and home. He was a wonderful, devoted father that loved his children more than anything.

On Feb. 27, 2012, James was diagnosed with Stage Four Glioblastoma Brain Cancer with a prognosis of four-six months. James, always a fighter, surpassed all expectations and was able to enjoy almost 11 months with what mattered most to him, his family. On Jan. 8, 2013, he was called home for rest.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Ann Gefroh; siblings and their spouses, Debbie (Gefroh) Senger and special friend, Dennis Wald of Strasburg, Beverly (Gefroh) and Shannon Bosch of Ankeny, Iowa, Derald and Nancy Gefroh of Hague and Douglas and Carrie Gefroh of Hague; first wife, Shelly Gefroh of St. Charles, Mo.; children, Bobby (33) of Bismarck, Amber Gefroh- Blady (29) of Rosepine, La., Kayla (23) of U.S.A., Ashley (20) of St. Charles, Madison (9), James Wade and James Weston (7), and James Wyatt (3); daughterin law Missy; son-in-law Gavin Blady; grandchildren, Abbey, Nathan, and Lucas, of Rosepine, and Riley and Reed of Bismarck; and 12 nieces and nephews, Terri Lynn, Tonya, Dion, Dylan, Taylor, Al, Cassie, Kimberly, Cole, Kaitlyn, Hannah, and Tyler.

He was preceded in death by his father, Aloysius Gefroh; paternal grandparents, Helen and Marcus Gefroh; and maternal grandparents, Wendelin and Christina Schumacher.

Funeral Mass was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Linton, with celebrant Fr. David Richter and concelebrant Fr. Jason Signalness. Organist was Catherine Unger. Song leader was Diane Wangler. Special music was “Daddy’s Hands” sung by Tom Vetsch.

Scripture readers were Tonya Senger and Terri Lynn Lett. Gift bearers were the grandchildren. Mass servers were Jack Sannes and Tate Scherr. Communion ministers were Lisa Merk and Dennis Hulm. Music was “Amazing Grace,” “Here I am Lord,” “ Be Not Afraid,” “I am the Bread of Life,” “Song of Farewell” and “On Eagles’ Wings.”

Casketbearers were Tim Lett, Don Eberle, Al Gefroh, John Weber, Dion Senger, DylanSenger,JerrySchneider and Mark Schumacher Jr.

Interment was in St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery, Linton.
