Lady Clippers stop skid by holding off Eureka-Bowdle
The Strasburg-Zeeland Lady Clippers snapped a 3-game losing skid by surviving a low-scoring affair, 35-32, over Eureka-Bowdle (SD) in Zeeland on Jan. 7. The Lady Clippers improved to 2-3 with the victory.
The first half was very close, as neither team could get its offense going. Strasburg-Zeeland held an 11-9 edge after one period, and held the lead by the same margin (19-17) at the half. Madelyn Kramer and Courtney Bubach scored 6 points apiece for Strasburg-Zeeland in the first half, while Samantha Raile tallied 6 points for Eureka-Bowdle in the half.
Eureka-Bowdle really went cold in the third period to allow Strasburg-Zeeland to pad its lead, but the Lady Clippers returned the favor in the final period, and had to hang on as the gap in their lead narrowed. Eureka- Bowdle hit just two field goals and scored just 4 points during the third quarter, and Strasburg-Zeeland was able to build a 30-21 advantage heading into the final period.
The Lady Clippers, however, turned in their worst offensive performance of the night in the final quarter, hitting just one field goal over the final 8:00. The Lady Clippers were just 3 of 8 from the free throw line in the frame, but that proved to be the difference as they held on for a 35-32 victory.
Strasburg-Zeeland shot just 27 percent (13 of 49) from the field, including just 12 percent (2 of 17) on three-point attempts, and the Lady Clippers hit on just 7 of 19 (37%) free throws, including just 3 of 10 (30%) in the second half. The Lady Clippers turned the ball over 18 times in the game, but they held a 41-31 advantage in rebounds, including an 11-6 margin on the offensive glass. Eureka-Bowdle turned the ball over just 8 times, but the Lady Patriots hit on just 5 of 9 free throws, and 13 of 50 (26%) field goals, including just 1 of 11 (9%) shots from behind the arc.
Bubach paced Strasburg- Zeeland with 11 points, to go along with 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals, while Kramer finished with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Ali Wolf scored 6 points and pulled down a gamehigh 12 rebounds, Jennifer Wikenheiser tallied 4 points and 5 rebounds, and Brittany Moser (7 rebounds, 2 assists) and Suzanne Ternes netted 3 points apiece to complete the scoring for the Lady Clippers.
Raile scored a game-high 13 points for Eureka-Bowdle, and Alexis Beck, Sierra Lutz and Sierra Stutz chipped in 5 points apiece for the Lady Patriots.
