Lions top Central Prairie for fifth straight victory

Seven Linton-HMB players scored at least 8 points, including four in double figures, and the Lions rolled up a season-high total in points during an 84-45 victory over Central Prairie at the Ben Kalberer Gymnasium in Hazelton on Jan. 10.

Linton-HMB improved to 7-3 on the season, including a 4-1 mark in District 6, while Central Prairie fell to 0-4 in the district and 1-9 overall with the loss.

The Lions jumped out to a big lead in the opening period and cruised from there. Brooks Flyberg knocked down a trio of three-pointers and Mason Ryckman added 6 points in the frame to help Linton-HMB open up a 27-8 cushion by the end of the period. Central Prairie had its best offensive showing of the night during the second period, but Linton-HMB remained comfortably in front, and the Lions increased the margin to 46-23 at the intermission.

Four players scored at least 7 points in a balanced scoring attack for Linton-HMB in the first half. Flyberg netted 9 points, Jon Purintun and Ryckman tallied 8 points apiece, and Travis Baumiller scored 7 points for the Lions in the half. Central Prairie’s Brett Williams hit three 3-pointers and led all first-half scorers with 13 points.

Linton-HMB continued to pad its lead and pull away during the second half, and the Lions doubled up (68-34) Central Prairie by the end of the third period, before pulling the starters early in the final period.

Linton-HMB shot a season best, 65 percent (33 of 51) from the floor, including a 54 percent (7 of 13) showing from behind the arc. The Lions also sank 11 of 16 (69%) free throws, held a 27- 21 rebound advantage, and committed just 8 turnovers in the game. Central Prairie hit on 20 of 47 (43%) field goal attempts, and attempted just 3 free throws (one converted) the entire game.

Flyberg, who went 4 for 5 on three-pointers, finished with 14 points, 3 assists and 3 steals, and Purintun tied for team-high honors with 14 points for Linton-HMB. Andrew Small netted 13 points, Tyler Humann added 11 points, 2 assists and a pair of steals, and Baumiller chipped in 9 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Ryckman (5 rebounds) and Ryan Schneider (9 rebounds, 2 assists) scored 8 points apiece for the Lions. Williams tallied a game-high 17 points for Central Prairie, and Alex Essinger netted 11 points for the Firebirds.
