Evangeline ‘Van’ Rau, 85, of Rapid City, S.D.

Evangeline Rau Evangeline Rau Evangeline “Van” Rau, 85, of Rapid City, S.D., went to be with her Lord in Heaven on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013.

She was born on July 24, 1927, to Pastor Edward and Luda (Wolfe) Fenske in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. She lived in Edenwald and Fenwood, Saskatchewan until age four.

In 1931 her parents immigrated to the United States to pastor the North American Baptist churches in Eureka and Herreid, S.D.

When she was 10 years old her parents returned to Canada, where her father pastored in Vancouver, British Columbia and Carbondale, Alberta.

In 1944 the family returned to Herreid. She graduated from Herreid High School in 1945. Van attended Northern State College in Aberdeen, S.D., and taught in Pollock, S.D., and Rapid City.

In 1947 she married Milbert Rau. They shared 35 years together until her husband went home to heaven in 1982.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway, The Oldies Singers, VFWAuxiliary and Canyon Lake Senior Center. She has been a resident of Clarkson Health Care for the past six years.

She is survived by her daughters, Judy Walker and her husband, Randy, of Alta Loma, Calif., Joann Tibbs and her husband Craig, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Cathy Lang and her husband Dennis, of Gilbert, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Gregory Walker, Jeffrey Walker, Meagan (Tibbs) Christesson, Lindsay (Tibbs) Schuman, Ryan Lang, Taylor Lang and Kaitlyn Lang; six greatgrandchildren, her sister, Darleen Jahraus, of Bismarck; her sister-in-law, Lavonne Fenske, of Owatonna, Minn., and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Milbert, her brother, Gordon, and special companion, Orval Hemmingson, in November of 2010.

Services were held Sunday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating.

Interment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
