Biel’s buzzer-beater lifts Herreid- Selby Area (SD) over Lady Lions
Haylee Biel’s basket as time expired gave Herreid-Selby Area (SD) a 44-43 victory over Linton-HMB in Linton on Feb. 2. The Lady Wolverines improved to 14-1 on the season, while Linton-HMB dropped to 9-4.
Herreid-Selby scored the first 5 points of the game and never trailed in the first half. The Lady Wolverines opened up their biggest lead (12-6) late in the opening period, and took a 14-10 advantage into the second quarter.
The LadyWolverines held a 6-point lead on two occasions during the second period, including a 21-15 lead after Shauni Schwartz put in a threepointer at the 3:20 mark. However, Linton-HMB scored 6 straight points over the next 2:00, and Courtney Gefre’s jumper tied the game at 21- 21 with 1:20 left in the half. Schwartz’s three-pointer on the ensuing possession broke the tie, and Herreid-Selby took a 24-21 lead to the half.
Herreid-Selby hit on 8 of 17 (47%) field goals and sank all 4 of its free throw attempts in the first half, but the Lady Wolverines committed 11 turnovers, compared to just 5 miscues turned in by the Lady Lions. Linton-HMB connected on just 8 of 23 (35%) field goals and 3 of 6 free throws in the half. Schwartz scored 10 points, and Flyberg netted 8 to lead their respective teams in the first half.
Two straight baskets by Kaidra Larson on consecutive trips gave Linton-HMB its first lead of the game (27-26) with 4:52 left in the third period, and after Herreid-Selby regained the lead on baskets by Schwartz and Kendra Thorstenson, Linton-HMB closed out the period with a 9-0 run that would keep the Lady Lions in the lead until the closing seconds of the game. Tiffaney Gerving started the run with a three-pointer at the 2:52 mark that tied the game at 30 apiece, and Larson added a basket, followed by two more field goals from Alex Umber to give the Lady Lions a 36- 30 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Flyberg capped a 10-0 run with a free throw that gave Linton-HMB its biggest lead (37-30) with 7:37 left in the game, but the Lady Lions missed 6 of their next 7 field goal attempts, and scored just 2 points over the next 6:55. Herreid-Selby, which went scoreless for over 5:30, finally got on the board when Taylor Madden knocked down a three-pointer at the 5:30 mark, and Schwartz’s putback on the Lady Wolverines next possession cut the lead to 37-35 with 4:50 left. After Gerving and Thorstenson traded baskets to keep Linton-HMB’s lead at 2 points (39-37), neither team scored for over 3:00, until Amber Umber put in a short-range field goal to give the Lady Lions a 41-37 advantage with :42 left.
Herreid-Selby misfired on a three-point attempt on its next trip, but the rebound bounced out to Schwartz at the top of the key, and she dropped in a three-pointer to cut the margin to 41-40 with :22 left. Flyberg’s free throws extended the lead to 43-40 with :18 left, but Herreid-Selby still had a chance to tie the game with a three-pointer.
Linton-HMB did a good job of closing off the three-point line, so Thorstenson drove in for a 2-point basket, and was fouled on the play, leaving her with a chance to tie the game with a free throw with just :06 remaining. Thorstenson missed the free throw, but Schwartz grabbed the rebound for Herreid-Selby, and was tied up as she tried to put it back. However, the arrow pointed to Herreid-Selby, and the Lady Wolverines would inbound from under their own basket with :04.3 showing on the clock. Linton-HMB tipped the inbound pass, but Biel retrieved it and put up a shot from the left side of the lane that banked through as time ran out.
Herreid-Selby shot just 33 percent (9 of 27) and missed its only free throw attempt in the second half, but the Lady Wolverines connected on their final three shot attempts, which all came in the final :22. For the game, Herreid- Selby hit 17 of 44 (39%) field goals, including 6 of 18 (33%) three-pointers, and 4 of 5 free throws. Linton-HMB finished at 40 percent (17 of 43) from the field, and 50 percent (6 of 12) from the stripe in the game.
Schwartz netted a gamehigh 17 points, while Thorstenson scored 8 points, and McKenzie Frank chipped in 6 points for Herreid-Selby. Flyberg led Linton-HMB with 11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals, and Larson netted 8 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Alex Umber tallied 6 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists, while Gerving (2 steals) and Amber Umber (4 rebounds) chipped in 5 points apiece for the Lady Lions.
