Clippers topple Napoleon to close out district slate
Strasburg-Zeeland closed out its District 6 schedule with a 68-35 blowout over homestanding Napoleon on Feb. 1. The Clippers, who improved to 15-1 overall, finished their district slate with a 9-1 record, and left them tied with Linton-HMB for the top spot in the district. However, Linton-HMB earned the top seed in the District 6 Tournament by virtue of point differential in head-to-head match-ups between the two teams.
The District 6 Tournament, which will be held February 16, 18 and 19, in Napoleon, and both Strasburg-Zeeland and Linton-HMB will receive first-round byes, and won’t play until the semi-final round on Feb. 18. Napoleon, meanwhile, finished its district schedule at 2-8, and the Imperials dropped to 5-12 overall. Napoleon will be the fifth seed in the district tournament, and they will face Kidder County in the opening round on Feb. 16.
Strasburg-Zeeland led all the way through, but the lead was just 12-4 at the end of the first period, and 23-17 at halftime. However, the Clippers used a 26-12 run in the third quarter to open up a 20-point (49-29) advantage, and then continued with a 19-6 run in the final quarter to blow the game open.
Scotti Scherr canned five 3-pointers and scored a gamehigh 15 points, to go along with 4 rebounds and 3 assists, and Cole Nieuwsma (12 pts., 7 rebounds, 3 assists), Jon Stabler (11 pts., 7 rebounds) and Kyle Nieuwsma (10 pts., 8 rebounds, 6 assists) also scored in double figures for Strasburg-Zeeland. Nic Kramer tallied 7 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists, Mason Kramer chipped in 5 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals, and Brody Nieuwsma scored 4 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and handed out a game-high 8 assists for the Clippers. Trent Fettig led Napoleon with 11 points, and Bryce Fettig and Dylan A. Bitz scored 9 points apiece for the Imperials.
