Lions down Lisbon in challenge match, headed to State Dual Tournament


The Linton-HMB Wrestling team qualified for the State Wrestling Dual Tournament after going 3-1 in the Region I Dual Tournament in Oakes on Feb. 2. The Lions advanced to the State Dual Tournament for the first time since 2004. For the first time in nine years, Linton-HMB will participate in the State Wrestling Dual Tournament, after the Lions went 3-1 and defeated Lisbon, 40-35, in the challenge match of the Region I Dual Tournament in Oakes on Feb. 2.

Linton-HMB, which improved to 14-4 in duals this season, was seeded 4th coming in, but the Lions knocked off the number two and three seeds on their way to the state dual qualification. Linton-HMB defeated Napoleon, 63-10, in the quarterfinals, but fell to topranked and top-seeded South Border, 61-12, in the semifinals. The Lions stayed alive with a nail-biting, 36-35 win over 2nd-seeded Oakes for third place, and earned the chance to challenge thirdseeded Lisbon, which fell to South Border, 42-22, in the championship match.

Linton-HMB advanced to the State Dual Tournament for just the fourth time overall, and for the first time since 2004. Linton-HMB also advanced to the State Duals in 2001 and 2002, and was the State Dual runner-up in 2001. The State Class B Dual Tournament will be held during the State Class A and B Wrestling Tournament at the Fargodome, Feb. 14 and 15. The Lions will open the State Duals against Region IV Champion Hettinger- Scranton on Feb. 14.

Challenge Match
Linton-HMB 40 Lisbon 35

It came down to the final bout, but Andrew Leier’s pin over Dalton Reinke at 132 gave Linton-HMB a 40-35 victory over Lisbon.

Lisbon jumped out to an 11-0 lead after a pin by Dalton Rotenberger (138) and a technical fall by Dylan Urbach (145), but Brock Nagel got the Lions on the board with a pin at 152, and after Lisbon’s Wyatt Smith edged Clay Jacob, 2-1, at 160, Michael Oien recorded a pin at 170, and Garret Roemmich was issued a forfeit at 182 to put Linton-HMB on top, 18-14.

Pins by Trevor Zins (195) and Dylan Claus (220), and a forfeit win by Wyatt Smith (285) gave Lisbon its biggest lead (32-18) of the dual, but Linton-HMB won four of the final five bouts to pull off the victory.

Consecutive pins by Brandon Oien (106) and Josh Schlosser (113) closed the gap to 32-30, and then Kyle Moch shocked defending state champion Jace Berg, 18-5, in the 120-pound bout to give the Lions a 34-32 lead with two bouts left. Grant Johnson put Lisbon back on top with a 4-3 decision over Chase Jacob at 126, but Leier pinned Reinke in the second period (3:36) to send the Lions to state.

Quarterfinals
Linton-HMB 63 Napoleon 10

Napoleon fielded just four wrestlers, and Linton-HMB cruised to a 63-10 victory over the Imperials in the quarterfinals.

Josh Schlosser (113), Kyle Moch (120), Trevor Martin (138), Brock Nagel (145), Jadyn Schumacher (152), Clay Jacob (160), Garret Roemmich (182), Ethen Roemmich (195) and Cody Schlosser (285) each won by forfeit to account for 54 points in the match for the Lions.

Linton-HMB won two of the three bouts wrestled, with Brandon Oien recording a pin over Jacob Bitz at 106, and Andrew Leier winning a 4-3 decision over Dalton Jangula at 132. Nicholas Becker won by major decision at 170, and Andrew Beine was issued a forfeit at 220 to account for Napoleon’s scoring.

South Border won 8 of 10 bouts wrestled and had three forfeits on the way to a 61-12 victory over Linton-HMB in the semi-finals.

Tyler Toepke-Floyd (106), Blake Bosch (126), Brayden Kuntz(138),TrevorMeidinger (170), James Thielges (182) and Dillon Braaten (285) each won by pin, Joel Weber won by major decision at 132, and Jace Schilling won by decision at 152 for South Border.

The Mustangs also got forfeit wins by Tucker Meidinger (160), Tanner Meidinger (195) and Richard Rico (220). Linton-HMB’s points came on pins by Josh Schlosser (113) and Brock Nagel (145).

Third Place
Linton-HMB 36 Oakes 35

Linton-HMB kept its State Dual Tournament hopes alive by edging Oakes, 36-35, in the Region I Dual Tournament third place match.

Oakes jumped out to a 9-0 lead on a decision by Caden Coleman (132) and a pin by Austin Kelly (138), but Linton-HMB got a pin from Brock Nagel (145), a default (injury) victory from Jared Schumacher (152), and a pin from Clay Jacob (160) to take an 18-9 lead. A technical fall win by Cole Ehrlin (170) and a decision by Jed Bopp (182) cut the margin to 18-17, and after Ethen Roemmich recorded a pin for Linton-HMB at 195, Cole Kelly picked up a pin for Oakes at 220, and Michael Kelly was issued a forfeit at 285 to give the Tornadoes a 29-24 advantage.

Brandon Oien’s pin at 106 put Linton-HMB back on top for good (30-29), and then Josh Schlosser won a decision at 113, and Kyle Moch recorded a takedown in overtime for a 10-8 decision over defending state champion Erik Loepp at 120 to clinch the victory (36-29) for the Lions. Robert Schmit won by forfeit for Oakes in the final bout at 126 to close out the scoring.
