Lions place 2nd in Edgeley-Kulm J.V. Tournament
Linton-HMB came away with 2nd place in the Edgeley- Kulm Invitational Junior Varsity Boys’ Basketball Tournament, held Feb. 7 and 9, at the Kulm High School Gym. Linton-HMB, which drew a bye in the opening round, defeated Oakes, 52-44, in the semi-finals, but then fell to host Edgeley-Kulm- Montpelier, 59-49, in the championship game.
Chris Miller, Josh Foley and Trystan Harr combined for 52 points to lead Edgeley- Kulm-Montpelier to a 59-49 victory over Linton-HMB in the championship game on Feb. 9.
The game was tied, 17-17, after one quarter, but E-K-M moved in front, 30-26, at halftime. Miller (13), Foley (11) and Harr (4) accounted for all but 2 of E-K-M’s points in the first half, while Austin Bernhardt tallied 8 points in the half for Linton-HMB. Linton-HMB closed the gap to 39-37 by the end of the third period, but E-K-M used a 20-12 run over the final 8:00 to pull away.
Miller finished with a game-high 22 points, while Foley and Harr netted 17 and 13 points, respectively, for E-K-M. Erik Holzer (11), Jordan Hulm (10) and Bernhardt (10) each scored in double figures for Linton-HMB, and other scorers for the Lions were James Schmaltz 6, Andrew Small 6, Cole Vander Laan 4, and Jayden Benz 2.

Andrew Small scored a game-high 25 points and Linton-HMB advanced to the championship game with a 52-44 win over Oakes.
Linton-HMB held a 12-6 lead after one quarter, and then Small (10) and Austin Bernhardt (8) combined for 18 points in the second period to help the Lions open up a 36-25 advantage at the break. Small tallied 16 points and Bernhardt scored 10 for Linton-HMB in the first half.
Oakes closed the gap to 43-39 by the end of the third quarter, but the Tornadoes were held to just 5 points on a pair of field goals in the final period. Linton-HMB hit just one field goal (Jordan Hulm) in the final quarter, but the Lions sank 7 of 10 free throws in the frame to help pull away.
Bernhardt didn’t score in the second half, and he finished with 10 points, while Erik Holzer and James Schmaltz netted 5 points apiece, and Hulm added 4 points for Linton-HMB. Jayden Benz chipped in 2 points and Cole Vander Laan sank a free throw to complete the scoring for the Lions. Preston Anderson and Zach Huffman each scored 10 points to lead Oakes, while Jon Tyre and Matt Kuipers netted 9 points apiece, and Dalton Schuering scored 6 points for the Tornadoes.
