Adam Hulm is Champion of Emmons County Spelling Bee

Students from three county schools participated in the Emmons County Spelling Bee on Feb. 13, at the Emmons County Memorial Auditorium. Each school enters two students from grades six, seven, and eight.

Adam Hulm was the champion in this year’s Emmons County Spelling Bee competition. He is the son of Andy and Lisa Hulm of Strasburg. Adam is an 8th grader at Strasburg Public School and his spelling coaches are Mr. Mark Mittleider and Mrs. Dana Kramer. Placing second was Riley Mattheis, son of Ross Mattheis and Jami of Linton, and the late Terra Mattheis. Riley is in the 7th grade at Linton Public School and his spelling coach is Mrs. Melinda Mattheis.

Adam and Riley will represent Emmons County at the State Spelling Bee on March 22, at the Best Western Ramkota Hotel in Bismarck. Approximately 106 county winners will participate in the state competition. All contestants compete in a written round of fifty words from which the finalists are chosen. The finalists compete on an equal basis in a spelldown with first, second and third place winners being chosen. Emmons County students competed in a written test of 50 words. The top eight highest written scores advance to the oral round.

Melinda Mattheis is the coach for Linton Public School.

The Emmons County Spelling Bee was conducted under the direction of Mrs. Kimberly Droog, English teacher at Strasburg Public School, and Droog was also the Word Pronouncing Master. The oral competition was judged by Connie Job and Michelle Masset.
