Lady Lions fall to Napoleon in regular-season finale

Four Napoleon players scored in double figures, and the 3rd-ranked Lady Imperials rolled to a 72-50 victory over Linton-HMB in Linton on Feb. 23. The game was a make-up game from its original Jan. 31 date, and was the regular-season finale for both teams.

Napoleon finished the regular season with a 17-1 record, and the Lady Imperials finished their District 6 slate with a perfect record (10-0) for the third straight season. Napoleon will be the top seed in the District 6 Tournament, and received a first round bye.

Linton-HMB finished the regular season with a 13-6 record, and the Lady Lions will be the second seed in the District 6 Tournament with a 7-3 mark in the district. The Lady Lions also will receive a bye in the opening round of the tournament, which tips off Friday (March 1), in Wishek.

Napoleon scored the first 5 points of the game and held the lead for all but :40 in the game. Linton-HMB battled back, and McKenna Flyberg’s three-pointer gave the Lady Lions their only lead (10-9) with 1:55 left in the first period. However, Kendra Weigel picked up a pair of quick baskets off steals for Napoleon, and the Lady Imperials closed out the period with a 9-4 spurt to take an 18-14 advantage into the second quarter.

Apair of baskets by Mariah Jangula over the first 1:10 of the second period doubled (22-14) the lead, but Linton-HMB closed within 4 points on a couple of occasions over the next 4:30, and back-to-back field goals by Nicole Nieuwsma and Kaidra Larson cut the lead to 28-24 with 2:23 remaining. However, Napoleon ripped off 8 straight points over the next 1:15, and the Lady Imperials closed out the quarter with a 10-2 run to open up a 38-26 cushion at the half.

The teams shot about even from the field in the first half, but Napoleon attempted 14 more field goals, thanks mainly to forcing a dozen turnovers by the Lady Lions. Napoleon hit on 17 of 36 (47%) field goals, while Linton-HMB connected on 10 of 22 (45%) shots from the floor in the half. The Lady Lions also hit 4 of 7 free throws, while Napoleon attempted just one free throw the entire half, but the Lady Imperials turned the ball over just 3 times in the half. Weigel scored 17 points (10 in the 1st quarter), while Larson paced Linton-HMB’s attack with 8 points.

The 12-point deficit at halftime would be the closest Linton-HMB would get the rest of the way, as Napoleon started the second half with a 10-4 run, and Brenna Schmidt’s three-pointer ex- tended the lead to 48-30 with 4:40 left in the third quarter. Amber Umber answered with a three-pointer, and Flyberg added a field goal to cut the margin to 48-35, but Napoleon went on a 10-2 run over the final 3:15 of the quarter to open up a 58-37 cushion. The Lady Imperials shot a sizzling, 82 percent (9 of 11) from the field during the third period.

Linton-HMB showed a little life to start the final period, and Larson’s basket cut the lead to 59-43 with 5:45 left. However, that would be as close as the Lady Lions would get, and Napoleon ripped off 7 unanswered points over the next 2:00 to put the game away (66-43), and the Lady Imperials built as much as a 25-point (72- 47) lead before both teams called on the reserves for the final 2:10.

Napoleon hit on 15 of 23 (65%) field goals in the second half and finished 32 of 59 (54%) from the field for the game. Linton-HMB shot just 38 percent (19 of 50) from thefloor,includinga9of28 (32%) showing in the second half. The Lady Lions committed 18 turnovers, compared to 11 miscues by Napoleon, and the Lady Imperials held a 30-28 edge in rebounds.

Weigel finished with a game-high 21 points, and Dewald netted 18, including a dozen in the second half. Mikayla Young (12) and Jangula (10) also scored in double figures, and Schmidt chipped in 9 points for the Lady Imperials. Larson scored 16 points to go along with 3 assists and 2 steals, and Flyberg netted 9 points and 5 rebounds for Linton-HMB. Amber Umber hit a couple of three-pointers and finished with 8 points and 2 steals, and Alex Umber chipped in 6 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the Lady Lions.
