Napoleon holds off Lady Lions for District 6 Tournament Championship
Even though Napoleon (ranked third in the final State Class B Poll) has won all three of its meetings with Linton-HMB this season, and has won the last five regularseason contests between the two rivals, this marked the first victory for the Lady Imperials over the Lady Lions in a tournament game since a 57-46 win in the Region 3 Tournament semi-finals in 1998.
Napoleon improved to 19-1 on the season, and won the District 6 Tournament title for the second time in three years, while Linton-HMB, the defending District 6 and Region 3 champion, dropped to 14-7 on the year. Napoleon and Linton-HMB both advanced to the Region 3 Tournament, which began in Hazelton on March 11. Napoleon played Edgeley-Kulm (4-17) in the opening round, while Linton-HMB opened the tournament against Pingree- Buchanan-Kensal (8-13), and results of those games were not available at press time.
Linton-HMB got off to a fast start, and scored nearly half of its total points in the opening period. McKenna Flyberg hit 2 of the Lady Lion’s 3 three-pointers in the period and scored 8 points in the frame, but six Lady Lions got in the scoring column as Linton-HMB never trailed in the period. Later, Tiffaney Gerving put in a short jumper to give the Lady Lions their biggest lead (19-10) with just over a minute left in the period, and Nicole Nieuwsma’s putback gave Linton-HMB a 21-12 lead at the end of the frame. Linton-HMB hit on over half (8 of 15) of its field goals and 2 of 3 free throws in the first quarter, but things would go south offensively from there, as the Lady Lions would shoot just 24 percent (8 of 34) from the field, and 22 percent (2 of 9) from the line over the final three quarters.
Linton-HMB misfired on its first seven shots and went scoreless over the first 4:42 of the second quarter, while Napoleon ripped off 9 unanswered points to start the period, and tied the game (21-21) on Mikayla Young’s basket midway through the frame. Kaidra Larson finally got Linton-HMB on the board with a field goal at the 3:18 mark, but Napoleon scored the next 7 points to complete a 16-2 run, and Shania Gross’s three-pointer gave the Lady Imperials a 28-23 advantage with 1:03 left in the half. A basket by Larson and a free throw by Flyberg cut the margin to 28-26 at halftime, but Linton-HMB would never hold the lead again.

A pair of baskets by Mariah Jangula and another by Young completed a 6-0 run that gave Napoleon its biggest lead (38-29) with 4:28 left in the period, but the Lady Imperials hit on just 1 of their final 7 field goal attempts of the quarter, and scored just 2 points over the remainder of the frame. Gerving’s threepointer at the 4:00 mark ended Napoleon’s run, and Flyberg added a basket about a minute later to cut the margin to 38-34, but the Lady Lions could muster just a single free throw over the final 3:00 of the period, and Napoleon took a 40-35 advantage into the final quarter.
Linton-HMB scored the first 5 points of the fourth quarter to complete an 11-2 next 3:25, capped by Brenna Schmidt’s basket at the 2:20 mark for a 51-40 cushion. Napoleon didn’t score again, but the only Linton-HMB score the rest of the way came on Gerving’s three-pointer with just :33 left.
