Crop estimates released

Based on May 1 conditions, North Dakota’s 2013 winter wheat crop is forecast at 17.7 million bushels, down 56 percent from last year’s record crop, according to the USDA, NationalAgricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office.

Average yield is forecast at 52 bushels per acre, down 3 bushels from last year.

Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 340,000 acres, down 53 percent from last year. This would be 97 percent of planted acreage.

May 1 hay stocks, at 880 thousand tons, are down 48 percent compared to one year ago.
