Strasburg

By Christine Nieuwsma

After a rainy start to the week last week, we finally saw some sun for a few days, then had some more rain on Saturday. Sunday was a nice, sunny day.

Darin Nieuwsma was home on leave from Minot Air Force base at the home of his parents, Ray and Chris Nieuwsma, from Tues.- Thursday. They had lunch at The Galley on Thursday. Also eating at The Galley that day were Ernest and Carol Jean Dykema and her cousin Jenice Kashey.

Rose and Martin Wald had a nice turnout for their 90th birthday parties. They celebrated at the Senior Center on Sunday.

Lydia Roehrich went to Jerome Senger’s 80th birthday party at the Timeout Tavern. She said there was a good turnout there, too, as well as very delicious foods of all kinds.

Congratulations to Laura Huber on winning Miss Farmer/Rancher at Dairy Days in Linton last weekend! The Record will probably have more information about other winners.

Congratulations to all participants and thanks to all the farmers and ranchers in the area for their efforts in providing food for the world. Thanks also to those who put Dairy Days on every year!

The Rev. Arvin Roos returned Friday evening from a trip to Minneapolis, Minn. His son, Robert and Terry Roos brought him back and returned to their home on Monday. Arv will be moving in August to the same apartment building where Clinton Peterman lives in Minneapolis.

Donald and Doris Nicolay were to arrive Sunday evening and will be staying in Strasburg for a few months at the former Peter and Johanna Nieuwsma home, which they bought.

Darin Nieuwsma won an amateur mixed martial arts fight in Minot on Saturday evening against a state wrestling champ.

On Thursday evening, a small crowd met to discuss the future of the Strasburg Public School building. The old gym, weight room, and kitchen need either major renovation or replacement. This first meeting was to share the problem and invite input on possible solutions.Architects were there to discuss possible plans to add on to either the north building or the south building. Another meeting is tentatively planned for the last week of June to discuss the options further.

On Friday evening, Ray and Chris Nieuwsma met other family members at the home of Jill and Ben Scheirer in Bismarck. Sarah Brooks and children, Darin Nieuwsma, and Ben’s aunt, visiting from Maine, were also there. They grilled out and had a nice evening together.

Our sympathy to the family of Gerhardt Rutschke of Zeeland and recently of the Strasburg Care Center who passed away May 31st. His funeral was last week.

Also our sympathy to Phyllis and to the family of Bobby Fischer of Hague as he just passed away. He had been in the Strasburg Care Center for only a short time. May the Lord comfort those who mourn.

“Behold the turtle. He makes progress only when he sticks his neck out.” Shirley Thiessen. “Take each other for better or worse, but not for granted.” Arlene Dahl. “In a career playing heroes I learned a little about the real thing. A hero stands up for himself, for herself, but most importantly for others.” Kevin Sorbo (who played Hercules on TV). All quotations from Guideposts.

Happy Father’s Day next Sunday! Thanks to fathers everywhere for all that you do!
