Ottilia ‘Tillie’ Schatz, 91, of Zeeland

Ottilia Schatz Ottilia Schatz Ottilia “Tillie” Schatz, 91, of Zeeland died Thursday, June 13, 2013, at her residence.

Ottilia was born May 22, 1922, on a farm near Hague, the daughter of Bernard “Ben” and Katherine (Sahli) Hulm. She attended a rural school and worked on the family farm.

She married Leo Schatz on Nov. 24, 1947, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hague. They lived, farmed, and raised their children on the family homestead where Leo was born and raised. They moved into Zeeland in the fall of 1989. Leo died May 31, 1997.

Tillie enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church and St. Andrew’s Christian Mothers.

She is survived by seven sons and six daughters-inlaw, Jim (Karen) Schatz, Mandan, Ken (Ellen) Schatz, Oviedo, Fla., Wayne Schatz, Mandan, Richard (Sherry) Schatz, Bismarck, Steve (Gale) Schatz, Red Bluff, Calif., Dean (Kim) Schatz, Loveland, Colo., Randy (Tammy) Schatz, Fargo; two daughters and a son-in-law: Marilyn Schatz, Gilbert, Ariz., and Shirley (Adolph) Genz, Mandan; 15 grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Mary Chikis, Aptos, Calif., and Charlotte Buechler, Hague.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leo; four sisters, Elizabeth Wolf, Barbara Snobeck, Lena Mosser andAnna Schweitzer; three brothers, Peter Hulm, Walter Hulm and an infant Martin.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday June 18, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Zeeland with Fr. Wenceslaus Katanga officiating. Pianist was Emily Scherr.

Vocal music was by the Church Choir. Scripture reader was Thomas Welder. Gift bearers were the grandchildren. Communion minister was Kenneth Schatz. Music was “Amazing Grace,” “IAm The Bread of Life,” “Here I am Lord,” “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman,” “Song of Farewell,” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Casketbearers were Jim Schatz, Steve Schatz, Dean Schatz, Richard Schatz, Wayne Schatz, Randy Schatz and Kenneth Schatz.

Interment was in the church Cemetery.
