Linton Babe Ruth team splits doubleheader with Napoleon
The Linton Babe Ruth team picked up its first victory of the young season by defeating Napoleon, 8-7, in the first game of a doubleheader in Napoleon on June 10. Linton improved to 1-2 in District 6 with the victory, but Napoleon won the second game (non-district) to drop Linton to 1-3.
After holding Linton scoreless in the top of the first, Napoleon erupted for 7 runs in the bottom of the frame, but Cole Vander Laan, who came on in relief of Jordan Hulm to start the second, held Napoleon scoreless the rest of the way, and Linton was able to rally back for the victory.
Linton finally broke through off Napoleon starter Dalton Jangula with 3 runs in the top of the third, and Linton added 3 more runs in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 7-6. In the top of the 6th, Chase Schiele and Hulm each drew two-out walks, and both would eventually come around on wild pitches or passed balls. Schiele tied the game when he scored on a passed ball, and Hulm’s run off a wild pitch gave Linton an 8-7 lead.
Napoleon put the potential tying run on base in each of the final two innings, but came up empty on both occasions. Bryce Fettig reached on an error to start the seventh, but Jangula popped out to first, and then Fettig was erased at second on a fielders’ choice by Jamison Fettig. Vander Laan then got Braden Jangula to pop out on the infield to end the game.
Vander Laan allowed 3 hits and a walk while striking out 9 over 6 shutout innings for the victory. D. Jangula allowed 8 runs on 4 hits with 8 walks and 11 strikeouts over 7 innings for the loss. Schiele scored 3 runs, and David Beitelspacher scored twice for Linton.
Napoleon earned a split of the doubleheader with a 10-5 victory in the 5-inning night cap. The game was tied, 3-3, after two and a half innings, but Napoleon scored twice in the bottom of the third, and then tallied five runs in the fourth for a 10-3 cushion. Linton scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to close out the scoring.
Jaden Jangula picked up the victory for Napoleon, allowing 5 runs on 5 hits with a pair of walks and 11 strikeouts in five innings. Lance Weiser gave up 10 runs on 4 hits with 7 walks and 7 strikeouts in 4 innings.
Dalton Jangula (3 RBI, run) had a pair of doubles, while Jamison Fettig (2 runs, RBI) and Braden Jangula (RBI, run) had one hit apiece for Napoleon. Jordan Hulm (triple, double, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Chase Schiele (3 runs) each had two hits, and Will Sannes had the only other hit in the game for Linton.
